Fat and Happy...? (Why Fitness Left Me Broken)
Aug 29, 2024Fit but broken on the inside.
Is it better to be fat or to look good (but be unhappy)?
I used to think I had to choose.
Let me explain.
But first I just realized there are probably hundreds of you reading that don't even know who is writing to you.
It’s been a while since I’ve (re)introduced myself:
My life has been radically different since giving my life to Jesus - and to say that God has had us on a wild ride since then is an understatement.
I love my wife Lindsey (excuse me, DOCTOR Lindsey to many of you š), our beautiful Elise, and our handsome Noah.
Lindsey, thank you for loving me, for being easy to lead, saying yes to so much change, and always encouraging me to chase my passions. I can't wait for our children to stand on our shoulders for the hard work we have been putting in these past 8+ years.
š¤ For those that like certifications, I've done some 'school' things:
I played 4 years of college football, got my degree in Exercise Science, my Doctorate of Physical Therapy, my Strength and Conditioning Certification, among several other certifications and courses in exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle that aren't worth listing.
Just know I've lived and breathed educating myself in the health and fitness world for over half my life.
We had a Performance PT Clinic and Gym for 6 years before closing down our in person practice and moving across the country from CA→AL.
We transitioned 100% online and we now get to help people all over the country look, feel, and perform their best.
My Doctorate is in helping people get out of pain and injury - but my passions and skills have always been in helping people get stronger while looking and feeling their best.
Lindsey and I are on mission to Build Stronger Kingdom Families - I believe that starts with men.
If you’re not strong - physically, mentally, spiritually - your family will suffer.
Men have gotten physically soft, and it’s time to take back the physical standard that we’re called to.
Before I go on, there's a dark side to health and fitness I've discovered over the last 8 years.
I was sucked into it for many of those years.
There is another extreme that is equally dangerous - the physically ‘healthy’ men neglecting responsibility in other areas of life. This is an escape and a false picture of masculinity.
I was that man 24 months ago, chasing the extremes of fitness while neglecting what matters most.
This left me fit but broken and unhappy on the inside.
I have to fight a constant battle between pursuing extremes on my fitness journey and fighting complacency. My goal is to share the lessons I’ve learned as I’ve stepped up to the call of pursuing a higher standard as a man.
There’s nothing wrong with getting strong, building muscle, and seeing your abs - as long as your priorities are in the right spot.
I’m all for you pushing your body and getting healthy…that’s just not ALL that I’m about anymore.
And my schedule, my focus, and my energy finally reflects that.
I've run a 100 mile ultramarathon, improved my lifting total well over 1000 lbs, and dropped under 10% body fat over the last 8 months alone.
I don't say that to brag. Full transparency: I'm not even super proud of any of those accomplishments.
Like the excitement of a birthday or a vacation, all of those accomplishments kind of just came and went.
However, I am proud of the fact that I've accomplished each one of those things without taking much time away from my relationship with the Lord. From my relationship with my wife. From my kids. From our friends and family. From our clients and our passions.
There were times where I was working out 6, 8, or 10+ hours per week.
These days, most of my week's are spent right around 3 hours of working out. Occasionally less, but rarely more.
I want to help you reach a new level in how you look and feel without having to spend all of your time getting there.
You have more important things to do than spend your life in the gym.
A real warrior doesn't have to get ready through extreme diets, resets, or workout plans.
They choose to stay ready.
