What Is Performance Physical Therapy And Why It May Be For You

Oct 07, 2020

Happy October friends, you know what that means? Pumpkin spice everything, colorful fall leaves and a chill in the air, and of course celebrating physical therapy. Did you know October is National Physical Therapy Month? Bring on the celebration, because it is!

Here at Inside Out Strength and Performance we provide active adults, tired of falling short of their health goals, with a clear and customized plan to live a strong and confident life.

Many of us may have an idea of what physical therapy is or have had an experience of PT in the past for an injury or rehabilitation. But we understand that some of you haven’t encountered physical therapy before and might not know what we do as physical therapists.  So in honor of PT month, we wanted to share with you the official definition of physical therapy from the American Physical Therapy Board Association,

“Physical therapists are movement experts who improve quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care, and patient education.

Physical therapists diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to people at the end of life. Many patients have injuries, disabilities, or other health conditions that need treatment. But PTs also care for people who simply want to become healthier and to prevent future problems.

Physical therapists examine each person and then develops a treatment plan to improve their ability to move, reduce or manage pain, restore function, and prevent disability.

Physical therapists can have a profound effect on people’s lives. They help people achieve fitness goals, regain or maintain their independence, and lead active lives. “

Practicing as a physical therapist in the U.S., you must earn a doctor of physical therapy degree from a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education-accredited physical therapist education program and pass a state licensure exam.

Primary content for physical therapy schooling includes curriculum that may include, but are not limited to, biology/anatomy, cellular histology, physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, pathology, behavioral sciences, communication, ethics/values, management sciences, finance, sociology, clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice, cardiovascular and pulmonary, endocrine and metabolic, and musculoskeletal.

There’s a wide variety of settings physical therapists can work, from hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, clinics, in the home setting and gyms to list a few.

At Inside Out Strength and Performance our doctors of physical therapy specialize in bridging the gap from traditional physical therapy to performance physical therapy to help you get back to the workouts, hobbies and healthy lifestyles you love to live. We focus on exercise based treatment and strength training to help give you the tools needed to get rid of pain, improve strength, lose weight, and get back to the activities you love with strength and confidence. Dr. Dave is passionate about Helping active adults build confidence inside and outside of the gym through strength training, exercise programming, and transformation coaching. Dr. Lindsey specializes in building movement confidence for new moms and women seeking to live life strong and overcome pelvic floor dysfunction through physical therapy, exercise, and nutrition coaching.

As you can see physical therapy comes in all shapes and sizes and specialties. Your care matters. It should be personalized to you, your situation and your goals.  Just like you do your research for a new electronic or picking out where you’re going to go out to dinner for date night, you should find the best fit for you when seeking out physical therapy.

So, while you enjoy your pumpkin spice treats this October, take a moment to thank the physical therapist in your life and celebrate PT profession with us! Happy National Physical Therapy Month
